Most homes can be heated and cooled with one system. Larger structures sometimes require more than one system. In the case where the heating and cooling demand is greater than the ability of one system additional systems are necessary.

When one system is adequate to heat and cool the structure but different levels or areas exist then zoning can be achieved using thermostats, controls and dampers or pumps and valves to provide different comfort levels.
